There we were, a few reporters and photographers and a couple of interns, sweating away in this summer’s usual 90-some degree heat out front of the State House, awaiting the arrival of Angelina “Jolie” Pivarnick.
You’ll be forgiven if, like some of us, you ask yourself, Angelina who?
She’s one of the 20-something clowns, er, kids “starring” in the Jersey Shore reality series playing on a TV screen near you (and taping and drawing huge crowds to Seaside Heights). She was billed this way in the press release: “MTV Jersey Shore Rebel Superstar Angelina “Jolie” Pivarnick …”
The Superstar was to appear at the State House at 11 a.m. to push some tanning salons she’d agreed to represent as spokesmodel.
Some of us were there for a vicarious peek, for notebook items or to flesh out stories on the hit Jersey Shore show that’s invaded the Jersey Shore for a third summer.
Angelina, the Superstar, didn’t disappoint. She was already nearly an hour late, but was standing 50 yards off, alongside the hired car that ferried her here, possibly going over talking points one final time; or maybe to have the assembled corps wait just a little longer … After all, isn’t that what Superstars do? Make them wait? So why not make it a full hour late instead of, say, merely fifty minutes or so.
The Star-Ledger’s Matt Friedman remarked “I didn’t wait this long for the president,” referring to his coverage of President Obama’s visit to an Edison sub shop the day before.
Finally, Angelina did stroll up to the microphone. She wore oversized sunglasses and dressed in over-the-top black with some peek-a-boo mesh and high-heeled sandals. She went to the mic for the big announcement; answered a few questions from reporters afterward and went on her way.
We’re left to wonder just how much of a Superstar Angelina is when even cast-mate Snooki — ubiquitous as Elvis on the American pop landscape these days — is unknown to our self-styled hipster President of the United States. (Just ask the ladies on The View, where the President also stopped on his day in New Jersey/New York).
Angelina was upstaged a day later anyway, when Snooki snagged yet another set of headlines by getting herself arrested Friday afternoon in Seaside Heights on a disorderly conduct charge.
All in a day’s work, it seems, for what passes these days as a real reality show Superstar.
